Large trucks can lead to significant crashes when the truckers aren’t driving safely. Many people will automatically blame all semitruck crashes on these individuals. However, there are some instances in which other drivers will cause the crash. It is imperative that all drivers operate their vehicles in a lawful manner using appropriate safety measures.
Anyone who is driving on a road around semitrucks should keep some tips in mind. Not only can these keep you safe, they can keep everyone else around you safe.
Know the no zones
There are spaces all around where truckers can’t see. These are known as the “no zones” because no vehicles should be there. It extends 20 feet in front of the truck and 30 feet behind the trailer. It is two lanes over from the front of the passenger side of the truck to around 10 feet behind it, as well as from the driver’s door to around the middle of the trailer for the lane on the trucker’s side of the rig.
Don’t zip in front of them
Never try to zip in front of a semitruck. These vehicles take around 40 percent longer to stop than other cars. Not only is this a blind spot, but there is a risk that you will be rear-ended if you cut in front of the rig. In some cases, the trucker might be forced to decide whether evasive maneuvers are possible, which could put drivers in danger.
Stay away from the right side
Big rigs have a large turning radius. When you are in town, resist the urge to try to dart around a semitruck on the right side if it is near an intersection. You may be struck by the cab or trailer because the full turning radius for a normal sized rig is 55 feet. Specialty rigs might have an even larger one.
Only drive when you are fully capable
Nobody should drive when they are under the influence, distracted or fatigued. Drivers who fall into one of these categories can be just as deadly as a trucker who has one of these hazards present. Always remember to buckle up and insist everyone in your vehicle does the same. Additionally, try not to rush. Instead, leave a bit earlier than necessary to make it to your destination on time.
Even if you are taking all these safety steps, there is a chance that other drivers won’t. If you are involved in a semitruck crash, another motorist may be responsible for the accident, which could mean they are a defendant in a claim for compensation.
