What are top causes for crashes?

On Behalf of | Jan 24, 2020 | Car Accidents |

Drivers in Indiana can run into many crash-causing circumstances. While some of these causes can be easily predicted and avoided, others are harder to dodge. Today we will look at some of the top causes for crashes and what they mean for drivers.

Huffington Post looks at some causes of car crashes. Some have to do with actions that a driver or the drivers around them take. Examples include distracted driving and behaviors that fall under that umbrella. Distracted driving behaviors can include:

  • Texting while driving
  • Conversing with passengers
  • Changing the radio station
  • Adjusting the temperature

Aggressive driving is also an umbrella term for problematic behaviors such as tailgating or racing. Lapses in judgment make up another chunk of crash causes. This can include improper turns or wrong-way driving. Unfortunately, a one-time mistake can result in a head-on impact with another vehicle. This can leave both drivers devastated.

Unexpected swerving is another. This can be cause by distraction, road defects or car defects. Examples include potholes in the road or sudden and unexpected tire blowouts. Anything that startles a driver and causes them to jerk the wheel can also count. Another big risk is running across animals that dash in front of your vehicle. This often causes drivers to swerve or slam on their brakes.

Finally, the conditions in which you drive can impact crash levels. This includes driving at night, in the rain or in the snow. Inclement weather almost always results in a higher daily rate of crashes. Likewise, driving in any condition that lowers visibility has the same result.
