Is this a sign of a traumatic brain injury?

On Behalf of | Apr 27, 2021 | Car Accidents |

After getting into a crash, brain injuries are among the most common that victims suffer from. Among these injuries, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can create the biggest issues for you, health-wise. They can impact you in both the short and long term.

Thus, it is important to recognize the signs of a TBI. Even if you are not in a state of mind to identify them, you can see it in others and pass on the knowledge to friends so they can help you if need be.

Physical red flags of TBIs

Mayo Clinic shows the gamut symptoms of brain injuries may run. It often covers physical, emotional and mental signs. Often, physical signs show up first and fastest. They will usually be the tip-off to others that something is wrong. They can include disorders of the consciousness, such as blacking out or falling comatose. They can also include unevenly dilated pupils or clear liquid draining from the nose or ears.

Some physical symptoms are harder to see. This may include headaches that worsen over time, or numbness in the hands and feet. Nerve issues may also occur, along with sensory damage. For example, victims often experience blurred vision or tinnitus (ringing in the ears).

Overlap between mental and emotional signs

Emotional and mental signs often overlap. This is due to the fact that emotional issues affect mental ones and vice versa. For example, many victims find themselves extremely confused. This can lead to dramatic, extreme or hostile behaviors. Victims may even lash out at loved ones trying to help them.

While this situation is often hard on everyone involved, one of the best things you can do is continue pressing to get medical help. This is the only way to ensure the damage does not worsen.
