What is the clear fluid coming from your nose?

On Behalf of | Jan 11, 2022 | Personal Injury |

After suffering a serious blow to the head, you could also end up suffering from equally serious damage to the brain. These injuries – traumatic brain injuries (TBI) – have the ability to cause you chronic and long-term suffering especially if left undiagnosed or untreated.

It is important to note and understand any potential signs that might point to a TBI, then, starting with some that may seem innocuous.

Is that a runny nose?

Mayo Clinic looks at the signs that might point to some serious brain injury. One seemingly innocuous sign? A runny nose. In the event of a truly intense blow to the head, it is possible to cause a leak of cerebrospinal fluid. This clear fluid surrounds the brain inside of the skull, providing nutrients and creating something of a cushion for the brain to sit in.

If you notice clear fluid draining from your nose, it might not be a simple runny nose. It might actually be this cerebrospinal fluid. It could also leak from your ears. This indicates crucial damage and should serve as an immediate cause to see a doctor.

Other red flags

You will likely have other signs as well, such as nausea, vomiting, trouble with your balance, blurred visions, piercing headaches and difficulty with speech or motor skills.

Of course, as you may not be in the right state of mind to realize this after taking such a strong blow to the head, it is important for anyone you are with to understand and recognize these signs, too. That way, they can get you the medical attention you need in short order.
