What steps should you take immediately after a car accident?

On Behalf of | Apr 16, 2022 | Car Accidents |

When your vehicle and another car collide, the resulting accident may make you anxious in the time immediately following the incident.

Knowing some common steps to take and ways to handle this sudden situation can help you stay calm.

Stay around the area

According to the AARP, leaving the scene of the crash is a bad idea. Whether passengers or pedestrians need medical care or you need to move your vehicle out of traffic, you should make sure to stay where you are.

Additionally, you should exchange numbers and home addresses with the other party involved in the crash. You may even need to contact the police or an ambulance if someone around you needs additional help.

Document and take photos

Pieces of your car or the other person’s car may have fallen off as you both attempt to park somewhere safe. In order to document the extent of the damage, you should use your phone or other device and take photos of the scene and any parts of your car that fell off.

Asking people who witnessed the accident can also help you determine the order of events. However, you should avoid taking the blame for what you think you did or for the accident when talking to anyone involved in the crash.

Notice any pain

The adrenaline you feel after a serious event like a car crash can mask many signs of physical pain or injuries. As you calm down, take notice of any aches or pains in your body.

Some problems, such as internal bleeding, may not feel obviously painful at first when you are still stressed or overwhelmed. Taking these steps and keeping a list of what you did so far can help you deal with the aftermath of a car crash.
